The game that I'm currently using to demonstrate the RPG applications of the G-Link prototype is Morrowind. It's an epic RPG whose focus rests entirely on the player developing & finding their true selves by exploring and questing through a massive world. The data that the G-Link gathers is used to configure the user's Morrowind character (their gaming alter-ego) in the hopes of making their gaming character a more accurate reflection of their physical selves and visa versa. For example- say a player would like to gain a strength point for their character so that they can have more effective physical attacks. In a normal game they'd have to sit playing for many hours, endlessly hacking and slashing their way through hoards of enemies before they finally get their strength point. With the G-Link however, to gain their strength point they can simply get up, go outside and walk for 10,000 steps- the person has now physically been made that little bit stronger & fitter and the player and their gaming character are now a more accurate reflection of each other. Say another user happens to speak a lot during the day as they're quite social- by using the G-Link to monitor how much they speak on a regular basis, various bonuses to in game social attributes such as personality, speechcraft & bartering would be awarded. |

Elemental alignments have also been added to the Morrowind game engine specifically to demonstrate the abilities of the G-Link prototype. These elemental alignments utilise the environmental data that the G-Link gathers and the best example of how this works, and the potential that it offers, is night and day. Say that Player A is your average person who gets up early, works throughout the day and heads back home when it's getting dark. Player B however, is a night owl and prefers getting up sometime after midday and heads back to bed just after sunrise. In the G-Link modified Morrowind game, Player A will become light aligned from their generally high daylight exposure and Player B will become Dark aligned from their general lack of sunlight exposure. These alignments will have standard impacts for the players in game- light aligned players receive more damage from dark magic and visa versa but, there's a more interesting scenario that arises from these alignments. The G-Link modified Morrowind has been altered so that it can run a real time clock (i.e., so that it's daytime in game when is daytime in the real world) so if Player A fancies playing the game at night, then they might have a few problems. First off, because they're light aligned and it's night time, their stats may be slightly weaker than they would be during daytime. Also, because of their light alignment they'll have a slight glow to them which will make them stick out like a sore thumb on a darkened night landscape. They're also more likely to encounter Dark aligned players in the game (it being night, the Dark aligned players most active time) who'll be quite hard to spot as their Dark alignment makes them appear like shadows. So, does Player A bravely venture forth and try to make it on their own in this dark land or do they try to enlist the help of a Dark aligned player like Player B to act as a guide & escort for them? This system would encourage players to expand their social circle and would encourage them to interact with people they normally wouldn't encounter, hopefully resulting in the development of respect, understanding and possibly appreciation for those who are different to yourself. The aim of the device is NOT to constrict the player in any way though or reduce their enjoyment if the game- it merely aims to add some optional challenges and get the player thinking about their daily activities, interactions & goals. |
